Sunday, December 2, 2018With apologies, as it will or may seem odd for my use of words like "happy" and "joy" in an expression of condolence on the passing of your father. My joy was based upon recently reconnecting with your dad after 50 plus years of separation at Montabaur retirement home where my in-laws also happened to reside. Every subsequent visit with Mr. Carland at Montabaur was a joy. His mind was as sharp as a tack as he was able to recall with concise clarity events from our mutual past from the old neighborhood and vividly regaled many stories. Your dad was a contemporary of my parents and so until I was admonished by him to stop, I always called him Mr. Carland. With each visit he was gracious in asking about my parents health... being particularly concerned with my Dad's final stage battle with Alzheimer's and my mother's saintly care for him. During our talks he shared with me, with the obvious pride of a father, what each of his children were up to AND it was my pleasure to be reacquainted with my contemporaries - Barb, Theresa and Debbie who were there at various times during my visits. In fact my last visit was just a few days before his passing. He seemed in good spirits although I knew he had been through a lot with various medical maladies in recent years. We joked about sharing a common birth date - January 14th - albeit 30 years apart. I feel blessed to have had the pleasure of knowing your Dad at two different points in our lives. He was a gentleman under both circumstances.

Sunday, December 2, 2018Dear Jim, Pam, and the rest of the Carland clan, You have my deepest sympathy for your loss. As a member of Scout Troop 61 I experienced first hand the kindness and generosity of Mr. Carland as he spent countless hours on Scout activities and trips. And I can't think of a single time when his uniform was amiss or his neckerchief wasn't straight!
