Obituary of Robert B Fogelsonger

Robert B. Fogelsonger, "Bob" age 98 died October 31, 2016 in Clarence, New York. Robert B. Fogelsonger was born in Clarence Center March 17, 1918 to Benjamin Franklin and Gertrude Marie (Foote) Fogelsonger. Early schooling was a two-room school house on Clarence Center Road, Clarence Center. The "Peanut Line" (New York Central Railroad) provided transportation to Kibler High School in Tonawanda where Bob graduated in 1935. Following one year at the Buffalo Collegiate Center (Erie Community College) Bob attended Syracuse University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Mechanical Engineering in 1940. Bob went to work for Babcock Wilcox in Barberton, Ohio. After four years he left his employer to join the US Navy in 1946. Following two years and the position of LT.J.G. Bob returned to Clarence Center to take over his Uncle John Hartwig's lumberyard. In 1943 Bob married his high school sweetheart Virginia Wulf. They were blessed with 57 years of marriage until Virginia passed away in 2002. Bob and Virginia were proud parents of their daughter Mary; who married Douglas Galke and lives in Blowing Rock, NC. Following 35 years of owning and operating Fogelsonger Lumber on Railroad Street he retired in 1982 to enjoy a lifestyle that involved giving his time to his church and community. His interest in wood lead him to develop a tree farm in Collins Center, NY. Bob planted over 1500 trees and harvested a great number of them. Not only did he use some of them to heat his home; he had a workshop in his basement which he made a variety of things for friends and neighbors. Bob's involvement and activities included; being a member of Zion Lutheran Church since childhood. His roles at the church included church council member, choir member, property committee and chairman of three different church building additions. He was a charter member of the Clarence Lion's Club, Town of Clarence Ethics Committee for 10 years; member of the Service Club for Retired Executives (SCORE), for many years he served on Trees for Tomorrow planting over 100 tress in Clarence Center and an active member of Friends of Clarence Arboretum. Bob was an active member of the Clarence Center Community Association. Survivors include his daughter Mary (Douglas) Galke of Blowing Rock, NC; grandson Benjamin (Mary Kate) Galke of VA; granddaughter Christine (Jay) Thacker of NC; great grandson James Douglas Galke; sister Jane French of Sarasota, FL; Cousin Ann Hasselbeck & Children, nieces, nephews, many neighbors and friends especially Steve Biegner. Predeceased by Marjory Facklam friend & companion. Visitation will be Friday November 4th 5-7pm at Shepard Bros Funeral Home, 10690 Main Street, Clarence, NY. A funeral service will be Saturday November 5th, 1pm at Zion Lutheran Church, 9535 Clarence Center Road, Clarence Center, NY with prior visitation at the church from 11am-1pm. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Bob's memory to the church or Friends of Clarence Arboretum, PO Box 305, Clarence, NY 14031.
