BRAATEN - Nelson Edward Of Clarence Center, formerly of Elma, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 27, 2017. Nelson was born in Buffalo on January 15,1924 and was the son of Oscar Braaten and Anna Flaatten, both immigrants from Norway. He was the younger brother of Gertrude, Robert, and Ralph, all who predeceased him. In October 1951, Nelson married Joan Carol Hoffman, and they resided in East Aurora and Elma, being happily married for 57 years until her passing in January 2009. Nelson graduated from Kensington High School in Buffalo in 1942. He served in World War II from 1943-1945 in the 1342nd Army Air Force Base Unit as a Crew Chief, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served first in India and then China, helping fly supplies over the hump to America's Chinese allies. He was discharged on Christmas Day in 1945 and after traveling by train all day, arrived home just before midnight to surprise his mother and father. After the war, Nelson graduated from the University of Buffalo with an engineer- ing degree. During his career, he worked designing hydraulic presses and torsional vibration dampers for Hewitt-Robins, Lake Erie Machine, Houdaille Hydraulics, and Vibratech, all located in Buffalo. Nelson is survived by his children James (Alicia) Braaten, Mark (Theresa) Braaten, and Nancy (Tim Augustyn) Braaten; and his eight grandchildren Timothy, Elizabeth, Michael, Melissa, Christopher, Corrine, Jeremiah and Joshua. In addition to being a skilled engineer, Nelson was a talented artist and musician (playing saxophone and clarinet in Big Band style swing bands as a youth), a fine golfer and bowler, and an accomplished woodworker. The Braaten home was filled with furniture he built by hand; he drew and carved numerous wooden airplane models, and made beautiful wooden toys for his grandchildren. The family would like to especially thank Hospice of Buffalo, Bristol Village, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Greenfields for all of the fine and loving care they gave to Nelson in his last days. A memorial service will be held for Nelson at SHEPARD BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME LLC, 10690 Main Street, Clarence, NY on Thursday, August 3. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations in Nelson's name to Hospice of Buffalo, the American Diabetes Society, or the American Heart Association.
